What is a DEXA Body Composition Scan ?

Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) : Body composition assessment provides report about your health of bones, body fat, muscle mass and and resting metabolic rate

A Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) machine uses x-ray to analyze body composition in terms of fat, muscle mass, and resting metabolic rate. This can also analyze bone strength, or bone mineral density, making it different from other conventional body composition scales or devices.

A DEXA Body Composition Scan is considered the gold-standard diagnostic tool to determine levels of overall fitness, demonstrating where body fat and muscle is distributed. The final report provides a breakdown of the composition of each arm and leg, showing side to side differences, as well as exact bone mineral content. Information is also provided regarding resting metabolic rate, which is an estimate of how many you would burn if you were to nothing but rest.

Information from DEXA scans can provide information for the following:
    • Athletic Training
    • Obesity and Metabolism
    • Osteoporosis

Athletic Training

    • DEXA provides information regarding bone, fat, and lean mass can show exactly where fat is being lost and muscle being gained
    • DEXA provides information regarding this, far more valuable than a simple weight scale
    • Assess muscle asymmetries which cause imbalances and stresses
    • Have a baseline in case of injury

Obesity and Metabolism

  • Those at greatest risk are thought to be those with central obesity – high levels of upper body (abdominal) fat
  • Monitor your weight loss program, to ensure that you’re losing fat and not muscle
  • Your unique resting metabolic rate can help guide a nutritional program, as you monitor your daily caloric, carbohydrate, and protein intake

Osteoporosis

  • A regular X-ray can show changes in bone density after bone loss of approximately 40%, while a DEXA scan can detect changes just of 2-4%
  • This measures bone mineral density in your hip, spine, and other bones. This can determine if further investigations and/or treatment is required
  • It can help diagnose osteoporosis before a broken bone actually happens

What Does it Measure?

Fitness enthusiasts, athletes, and dieters often use body composition scans to get a baseline of where they are now, and to objectively measure their progress.

The Scan Process

  • Quick – The actual scan only lasts 5-10 minutes depending on your height.
  • Painless – Simply lie down. There are no injections and it is completely non-invasive.
  • Open – It is not confining like a CT or MRI, perfect for those who might be claustrophobic or fearful of closed spaces.
  • Safe – There is no more radiation than a 1.5-hour flight. A chest x-ray for example has 50-100x radiation than a DEXA scan.

Who Should Get a DEXA Scan?

A DEXA assessment is suitable for people on athletes in training, weight management programs  as well as men/women at risk of osteoporosis and bone fracture.

  • Diabetes (Pre Diabetes, Type 1 or 2)
  • abc
  • bcd

For your DEXA scan, we suggest wearing soft, comfortable clothes without any metal fastenings like hooks, zippers, or buttons. This will allow you to lie down comfortably on the padded table and ensure that no metal objects interfere with or degrade the quality of the images. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown if necessary.

A DEXA scan is regarded as the Gold Standard for measuring bone density and body composition. It offers highly accurate and detailed insights into your body composition and is the preferred imaging test for diagnosing and tracking osteoporosis.

DEXA scans are very safe. They use a much lower level of radiation (X-Rays), than a standard x-ray examination. This means that the Radiographer will stay with you in the room during your examination.

We compare radiation doses to natural background levels of radiation we receive from the environment. A DEXA scan is equivalent less than a few days exposure, whilst for comparison, a Chest X-Ray uses the equivalent of about 3 days exposure.

There are no restrictions on normal activity, you can eat and drink normally, drive and return to work immediately after the scan.

The results will be checked by our kinesiology and/or Lifestyle Physician depending on Appointment type
