Psychiatry is a branch of medicine dedicated to understanding, diagnosing, and treating mental health disorders. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who assess both the emotional and physical aspects of mental well-being. They provide comprehensive evaluations, develop individualized treatment plans, can prescribe and manage medications when appropriate, and offer psychotherapy. The goal of psychiatry is to support each person’s mental health, functioning, and overall quality of life through compassionate, evidence-based care. Common conditions treated in psychiatry include:

Depressive disorders: Characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest, changes in sleep, appetite, and energy, and suicidal thoughts.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Marked by difficulties with attention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Which includes intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing anxiety.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD: Resulting from exposure to trauma and involving intrusive memories, avoidance, hypervigilance and nervous system dysregulation.
Psychotic disorders: Such as schizophrenia, which can affect perception, thinking, and behavior.
