SURFACE EMG (sEMG) FOR REHABILITATION & MUSCLE BIOFEEDBACK

Optimize your recovery with precision muscle monitoring. Our advanced Surface EMG technology provides real-time data to retrain muscles, enhance movement patterns, and track rehabilitation progress.

What is Surface EMG?

The Ability Clinic offers wireless, pain-free surface EMG for muscle biofeedback. This allows for analysis of force generation and specifically muscle activation. Graphical results are generated allowing for visit-to-visit comparisons as well as comparison to normal ranges.

How Surface EMG Works

A simple, painless, and highly effective three-step process to optimize your muscle function.

1. Electrodes

Small, adhesive sensors are placed on the skin over specific target muscles to detect electrical signals.

2. Data Analysis

Our advanced software processes muscle signals into easy-to-read graphs, measuring timing and intensity.

3. Feedback

Patients use visual biofeedback to adjust their technique and retrain their brain-to-muscle connection.

Key Applications in Rehabilitation

  • Biofeedback & Motor Learning

  • Assessment & Diagnosis

  • Progress Monitoring

  • Fatigue Management

Clinical Indications

Common Clinical Indications

Gait & Posture

Functional evaluation of dynamic movement patterns.

Neck Pain

“Cervical spine mobility” protocol for stabilization.

Low Back Pain

“Flex-Relax” protocol to assess activation and inhibition.

Radiculopathies

Retraining muscles affected by “nerve pinches” to fire normally.

Knee Pain

VMO and hip abductor activation (pre/post surgery).

Shoulder Issues

Rotator cuff tendinopathy recruitment patterns.

Surface EMG vs. Needle EMG

Surface EMG (sEMG)

  • • Completely non-invasive (no needles)
  • • Measures global muscle activity
  • • Used for biofeedback & movement training
  • • Painless & can be used during exercise
  • • Ideal for functional rehabilitation

Needle EMG

  • • Invasive (requires fine needle insertion)
  • • Measures specific motor unit activity
  • • Used for diagnostic nerve testing
  • • May cause minor discomfort/bruising
  • • Ideal for identifying nerve damage/disease

Benefits in Rehab

Objective Data

Make data-driven decisions based on precise measurements.

Patient Engagement

Visual feedback increases understanding and program compliance.

Personalized Treatment

Tailored interventions based on your unique activation profile.

Early Detection

Identifies subclinical changes before they become injuries.
